November 21, 1915 – September 14, 2015
After 99 yrs. of living on this earthly plain, our beloved Mother and the Good Lord decided it was time to go see Dad. Mrs. Evelyn Burdette passed away on Monday, 9/14/2015 in Schertz, TX after a long and darn good life.
Mom was born in Manhattan, New York on Nov 21, 1915. As a toddler her family moved to the Bronx where she became an avid baseball fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers. She went to many games since she lived only a few blocks from Yankee Stadium. It was her good fortune to have even seen Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and many of the greats of that era play ball.
During WWII, she joined the Red Cross to help in the war effort where she served in both the Philippines and New Guinea. In 1947 while serving in Yokohama, Japan, she met and married Army Capt. Maurice R. Burdette. They had the pleasure of living life together for the next 19 yrs. having 5 children, Lance, Maureen, Douglass, Stephen and Russell, until Dad's death in 1966.
After Dad's passing, Mom stuck to the task of raising us kids by taking 2 jobs making sure her children had clothes on their backs and food on the table. As for the food, no one could outdo her. Kids from the neighborhood would come to play and when called home for supper, they would first call out and ask, "Mrs. Burdette, what are you having for supper?" and invariably stay to eat. Never did she speak ill or derogatory remarks about anyone. She was the most kind and respectful person towards all others. People would simply gravitate to her because of her outgoing and pleasant spirit.
She was preceded in death by her husband Maurice in 1966 and son Russell in 1995.
She is survived by her loving children, Lance Burdette; Maureen Bird and husband Brad; Douglass Burdette; Stephen Burdette and wife Mary; 2 granddaughters, Jessica Walsh and Erin Bird; 2 step-grandkids, Sandy and Tara and four great grandkids, Brendan, Christian, Korbin and Kyndall. She will be dearly missed by all.
There will be a viewing Sunday, September 20, 2015 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Sunset Funeral Home. A graveside service will take place Monday September 21, 2015 at 9:30am at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road San Antonio, Texas 78209.
