He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. Kerner Sr., and Bernice Winter Kerner; and his sister, Betty and her husband, Clint Coombe. He was married for 49 years to the late Theresa Curley Kerner and together they raised five children, Nancy Kerner Broaddus (Grey) and their children, Sean and Phillip, Michael Kevin Kerner (Helen) and their children, Anna and Leah, Karen Kerner Neil (Rob) and their children, Suzanne, Ben and Tim, Craig Stephen Kerner, Terrence Winter Kerner (Kelly) and their children, Murphy, Matt, Patrick, Joseph and Nan. He also had four great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his dear friend, Grace Lynch, who was a loving companion and support during his last years. As a Professional Engineer (PE), he worked for Wiley & Wilson and Hankins & Anderson before eventually retiring from HCYu & Associates. He led the design of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems on a wide range of projects to include the Library of Congress and numerous university and high school facilities throughout Virginia. He enjoyed playing tennis and socializing at the Westwood Club and golf at the Hollows Golf Club. He taught himself to play the piano and to paint later in life. His favorite way to relax was to opine on the current political issues and to further educate himself through reading and watching Fox News. He also expressed his views in a number of published letters to the editor in the Richmond papers. He was a member of Saint Benedict's Church as well as Saint Bridget's and finally Saint Mary's Catholic Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, September 16, at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Rd., followed by burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
