Nancy Higgins was a daughter of William Holland Higgins (c. 1779-1824) and his wife Barbara Hensley (1797-1882). She was born in North Carolina, but when she was a child, her family moved to Washington (now Unicoi) County, Tennessee. On 10 April 1845, she married Hillings D. Tilson (c. 1806-1870s), a widower with a large number of children to whom she became stepmother. She and Hillings had at least six children:

1. Ruth Tilson (c. 1846/7) no information after 1870.

2. Margaret A. Tilson (c. 1850) no information after 1870.

3. George W. Tilson (c. 1851-before 1900) m. Priscilla Caroline Ingle (1840-1905) on 30 March 1873, in Murray County, Georgia. His mother and sister Nancy were living with them in Murray Co., GA in 1880. Caroline was a widow in 1900 living with her brother, so he must have died before 1900. (One sources says he died IN 1900). She's buried at Center Valley Cemetery, Chatsworth, Murry Co., GA, the only Tilson in the county per Findagrave.

4. Malissa C. "Lissa" Tilson (c. 1853) no information after 1870

5. Nancy E. Tilson (c. 1858) living with her brother, his wife, her mother & nephew Newell in Murray Co., GA in 1880.

6. Serena Tilson (c. 1860) apparently dead by 1870.

H. D. and Nancy were living in Washington Co., Tenn. at the time of their marriage, in Cherokee County, NC by 1850, in Union County, Georgia in 1860, and in Clay County, Kentucky in 1870. In 1880, Nancy was listed in the census as a widow, living with her son George, his wife Caroline, and her daughter Nancy and grandson Newell in Murray County, Georgia. One source states Nancy died prior to her mother's death in 1882, so I assume she died around 1881, probably in Murray Co., Georgia.
