Daughter of Benjamin Leigh and Abigail Pierce. She was married to Samuel Swasey 23 Feb 1803 in Newburyport Essex, Massachusetts. They relocated to Albany where Samuel worked as a morocco dresser (a specific process for the tanning of goat or kid leather) - a profession that son Stephen lists also. The family then relocates to New York City with Samuel appearing on letter lists in 1820 and in the city directory by 1823. However, Samuel disappears from the records after 1825 and his year of death is not known. Sarah first appears on her own in 1829 running a boardinghouse in New York City in the 4th Ward and is on the 1830 Federal Census there. This is the same ward that daughter Margaret Swasey McLean resides in with husband Peter.

Sarah becomes the administrator for her son Nathaniel K. Swasey on 22 Aug 1845 and lists her surviving children as Margaret wife of Peter C. McLean, Rebecca wife of David Bruce Jr., Sarah Swasey at home, and Stephen Swasey who signs his paperwork with an address of Albany.

In 1848, Sarah and Rebecca have Nathaniel K (age 28) and Samuel Swasey (age 29) interred in this plot.

By 1850, Sarah is living with daughter Rebecca Bruce in Brooklyn, which is where she died in September of 1854. An exact death date has not been established yet as the death registers for this year are not available or missing. Sarah was interred on 11 Sep 1854. Her daughter Margaret (Swasey) McLean died on the same date her mother was buried.
