Major League Baseball Player. For seven seasons (1955, 1959 and 1961 to 1965), he was a pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals, Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs. Born George Warren Schultz, he attended Burlington High School in New Jersey and was signed as an amateur free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1944. He bounced around between several different organizations over the next decade, before breaking into the Major Leagues with the Cardinals on April 12, 1955. However, an elevated ERA that year led to his demotion to the Minor Leagues where he spent the next the next five years (with the exception of a stint with the Tigers in 1959) refining his knuckleball pitch. He returned to the Major Leagues in 1961 and produced a career-high 7 wins with an impressive 2.70 ERA while in a Cubs' uniform. The next season, he yielded a career-high 51 games pitched. Schultz was traded to the Cardinals during the 1963 season and went on to experience a world championship the next year with St. Louis (1964). He played a major role as a reliable presence within the Cardinals' bullpen during their run at the pennant. Schultz pitched in 4 games during the 1964 World Series and recorded a save in Game One. In Game Three, he yielded a walk off home run to the Yankees' Mickey Mantle. The home run was of additional significance because it put Mantle ahead of Babe Ruth for the all-time leader in World Series round trippers. In 227 regular season games, he compiled a 20, 20 loss record with a lifetime 3.63 ERA. After retiring as a player, Schultz remained in the game and served as a Minor League coach. He served as the pitching coach for the Chicago Cubs in 1977 and is widely credited with developing Bruce Sutter into a Hall of Fame pitcher.
