James C. Hakes, aged 88, and a pioneer resident of Chippewa county, died at the home of his son, Jesse Hakes, in Eagle Point at three-thirty o'clock this morning. Death was due to paralysis, Mr. Hakes having suffered two strokes within the past two weeks.

Mr. Hakes was born at Columbia, Bradford county, Penn., Feb. 21, 1834, and came to Chippewa Falls forty-five years ago. He located immediately on a farm in Anson, which was his home almost up to the time of his death. He served in the Civil War and was a member of James Comerfold post, G.A.R. The funeral will take place on Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, services at the Methodist church, Rev. L.A. Brenner officiating.

Mr. Hakes was preceded in death by four wives and is surved by three daughters and nine sons, as follows: Mrs. Catherine Moss, Eagle Point, Mrs. T.P. Siddons, and Mrs. John Alleman of this city; C.Z. William and Ross of Anson; George of Boyd, John of Cornell, Jesse of Eagle Point, Louis of Arnold, August of Cadott, and Harry Hakes of this city.

(His pension files from the NARA states that he was born in Elmira, NY. I'm still working on proving his birthplace.)
