R. Norman Amos, 89, Callands, entered into rest on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at his residence.

He was born on October 16, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, the son of the late Lorenza Scott Amos and the late Viola Eanes Amos. He was married to his wife of 69 years, Mavis Rusling Amos, who survives.

Norman was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be greatly missed. He was a member of Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church where served in many capacities over the years. He proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II. He was a well-known Master Wood Carver, with displays in the Smithsonian. He was a founding member and former Chief of the Callands Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Pittsylvania County Historical Society.

He was retired from the postal service and enjoyed farming and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Paul B. Amos and his wife, Susan of Dry Fork; two daughters, Linda A. Gardner, of Martinsville and Gloria A. Reynolds, of Chatham; five grandchildren, Melissa St. John of Dry Fork, Richard E. Reynolds, of Martinsville, Michael Law and his wife, Angie, of Ridgeway, Christy Ferguson and her husband, Todd, of Figsboro, and Caitlin Amos, of New York, N.Y.; seven great-grandchildren, Jonathan Reynolds and Ian Reynolds, both of Martinsville, Matthew Law, of Ridgeway and Michaella Law, both of Ridgeway, Jacob Howe, of Spencer, Claire Howe and Gage Ferguson, both of Figsboro; and a sister, Shirley McFaddin of Natural Bridge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandchild, Jordan Paul Amos; brothers, Howard Amos, Harold Amos, Raymond Amos, and Jimmy Amos; and one sister, Gladys Collins.

Funeral services will be conducted at Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church on Thursday September 10, 2015 at 2 p.m. with the Russell East, III officiating. Burial will follow at the Amos Family Cemetery in Callands.
