Margaret Armstrong McLaughlin-Lachay-Blake
was born to William Armstrong (b: 1817) and Margaret Kennedy (or Rennedy..record scrip is hard to read) in Georgetown community in Halton (part of the greater Toronto area), Ontario, Canada.

I know little of Martha until her marriage to my Great Grandfather in 1881.

Prior to this she was first married to Robert McLaughlin (Laughlan) on February 13, 1862 in Halton County, Ontario Province, Canada.

She and Robert had 8 children: Mary Ann Laughlin abt. 1866; Frances Jane Laughlin abt. 1868; William Joseph Laughlin May 16, 1870; Samuel Laughlin abt. 1871; Martha Laughlin abt 1873; Rachel Laughlin abt 1875, David Laughlin abt 1878; David Laughlin abt 1878; and Robert Thomas Laughlin Mar 30, 1879 in Wiarton, Albemarle Twp., North Bruce, Ontario, Canada.

He husband Robert McLaughlin had been reported as dead in Canadian Armed Forces serving England. She married a Mr. Lachay but he too died.

She was living in the Albermarle Twp. when she met James Blake Sr. A twice widowed gentleman with 11 children. His children were older but his youngest was about 2 years of age. His 2nd wife died 24 hours after the birth of the last child.

February 14, 1881 in Owens Sound, Grey County, Ontario Martha Lachay 40 years married James Blake Sr. 54. Both were twice widowed, both with large families of children.

James Sr. took her to his home and she moved in with her children. 19 children! Elizabeth Ann Blake had a son and soon moved out. His next to the oldest was John Blake. He was married and moved to his own farm nearby. James Sr.'s oldest girl Martha Blake was 23, a spinster. Martha Blake would be one that would help with the families children, cooking and housekeeping. James Jr. was 22, Thomas George Blake and Solomon was just 17 helped their father with the farm. His youngest Margaret Jane Blake was almost 15 and would be good help around the house along with Martha Armstrong-McLaughlin-Lachay's children. The count in the home was now 2 adults and 17 children. No small task just to cook and wash for.

Martha became pregnant quite quickly and on November 7, 1881 she bore James Blake Sr. a daughter, Lillis or Lily Blake (full name is not known).

Soon she was pregnant again but received a shock when her 1st husband returned from the war. The reports of his death were in error and Martha was still Mrs. Robert McLaughlin. She and her 8 children moved out to Mar, Albemarle Twp., N. Bruce, Ontario which is near by.

Lillis was under the age of 2 and Martha was to bear another child. May 1, 1883 Victor Colonel Blake was born in Mar, Albemarle Twp., N. Bruce, Ontario.

His father James Blake Sr. decided to leave Canada. By June of the year of Victor's birth, his father along with his brother George Blake followed his father's former father-in-law, Mr. James Lee, in immigrating to San Juan County in the NW corner of Washington State, (USA).

Lillis and Victor would not see their father again. He died when Victor was 24 years.

Lillis Blake and Victor were taken to Sarnia, Lambton, Ontario at the SE point of Lake Huron just above Detroit, Michigan USA. Residence of Sarnia often traveled to Detroit through the border crossing just south of Sarnia.

Census show Martha McLaughlin, 10 years after her separation from James Blake Sr.'s family had taken the name of Martha Blake to match the last name of her two youngest children. She lived with two of her Laughlin sons. She was the Head of the home and her sons brought in wages for the household.

Lillis married and went on her honeymoon. Abt 1901 or later she died with her groom on their honeymoon in Detroit, Michigan by accidental death. The young couple were not experienced with Hotels and gas lighting, they blew out the hotel gas light as they would a kerosene lantern back home, not turning off the gas. Both died of asphyxiation during the night.

Victor Colonel Blake (went by 'Blake' because he disliked his proper given name) married Aug 15, 1913. He was in traveling sales and often went to Detroit. He and Jessie Olive Frayne of Forest, Lambton Shore Municipality, Lambton Co, Ontario, Canada married in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan USA. Another marriage registration appeared in Sarnia.
Jessie bore Victor a son..Glenavon Arlie Blake on Aug 5, 1903 in Lampton, Ontario Canada.

Possibly Victor's traveling for work or Jessie's desire to live in Detroit. The couple separated. July 3, 1913, Victor was working out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada when he filed for divorce on grounds of dissertation. Receiving a divorce from Jessie in Wayne County Circuit Court, Michigan, USA.

Soon afterwards on August 15, 1913 Victor married Isabella "Isael/Bella" Porter. A young woman born in Petrolia area of Enniskillen Twp., Lambton County (some say Plympton Township). Lambton County,) Ontario, Canada. Her father had 10-12 oil wells besides a fine farm. But an accident in wrestling a huge pig caused his death. Her parents were Charles Edward Porter (1850-1896) Born in Etobicoke, Vaughn Twp., York County, Ontario. And his wife Mary E. Shuttleworth (1853-1930) from Toronto Gore Twp., Peel County, Ontario Canada.

Isabella was their last child of 9 children. Mary Shuttleworth-Porter married again and her 2nd husband Webster Headley wanted to return to his home in Fresno, California. Bella was raised in Fresno, received a teachers certification and was returning to Saskatchewan to help her sister who had taken ill when she met the handsome Victor Colonel on the east bound train trip from Vancouver, BC. They were a handsome couple and within about a year they were married.

Victor and Isabella had two sons: Byron Porter Blake on Jan. 13, 1915 in Saskatoon, Sask. Canada. Then on April 14, 1920 their 2nd son was born, Roy Grenville Blake in Dodsland Village, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Canada.

January 30th of that year (1920) Victor's 1st born son, Glenarvon died of Parenchymatous Nephritis. 16-1/2 years of age.

Martha Armstrong-McLaughlin-Blake would continue to live in Sarnia until her death. Her son Victor would move west in Canada to Vancouver, British Columbia to live and raise her grandchildren.

Marth died on February 26, 1923. She had been living at Front Street, Sarnia, Ontario when she died in the in the Sarnia General Hospital. The forms were filled out by her son W. J. Laughton. She had been treated form Feb 19 to the 26th by Dr. J. A. Bell MD for Hemiplegia from cereberal thrombus which is contributed to congestion of the lungs and auricular.
