Geneva Payne, 84, of Young Harris, GA, formerly of Warne, died Tuesday (May 30, 2006) in an Atlanta, GA hospital. She was a native of Clay County, where she had lived most of her life before moving to Young Harris ten years ago. She was the daughter of the late Haskew James and Minnie Hall Swanson and the wife of the late Archie Payne, who died Nov. 20, 1989. Geneva had worked as a nurse for many years for Providence Hospital in Murphy and also worked for Dr. Walter Mauney. After retiring, she was a caregiver for many people in the community. She was a Jehovah Witness.
She was preceded in death by a son, Joe Payne and a sister, Bennie Lee Zervas.
Surviving are a daughter, Mildred Underwood and husband, Brian of Young Harris, GA; a son, Phillip Payne and wife, Geraldine of Hiram, GA; a daughter-in-law, Anita Davis Payne of Chandler, TX; five grandchildren, Kevin Payne and wife, Jennifer, Miranda Ellis and husband, Mark, Gregory Payne and wife, Slaveka, Shaun Underwood, and Shea Underwood; and a great grandson, William Paul Ellis.
Burial in Mount Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.
