William was the 10th child of Zachariah and Sarah Lane McCubbins. He married Phebe Duncan from Granger, Tennessee on October 8, 1818 and of this union there were four children and only two of whom lived to mature years, Robert and Zachariah. After William's father Zachariah died in 1834, it is said that William went to Indiana with his mother Sarah Lane McCubbins. Phebe sued William for divorce (for desertion) in 1833. Phebe later move to Jasper County, Illinois with Robert and his younger brother, Zach in 1840.
