A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Hummelstown July 28, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9 as a musician with Co. C, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863. His brothers David and Christian served in the same company.
2. Enlisted in Harrisburg July 15, 1864, mustered into federal service there July 18 as a musician with Co. D, 194th Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to regimental drum major September 9, and honorably discharged with his company November 6, 1864.
3. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 17, 1865, as a musician with Co. C, 192nd Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to principal musician April 1, and honorably discharged with his company August 24, 1865, at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
He married Mary Heckamon (to list but one spelling, and "Gish" is most often reported as her maiden name in online family trees) ca. 1875 and fathered John M. (b. 01/01/76), George (b. @1878), Mary H. (b. @1880, d. 04/03/85), and Joseph K. (b. 01/??/82). The aforementioned family trees also insist that he was living in Piatt County, Iowa, in 1880, but that is unverified. On April 3, 1883, while working in a quarry, he was seriously injured when an overhead cable let loose and struck him on the shoulder "leaving a severe gash besides breaking two or three of his ribs." The accident clearly inflicted internal injuries because a few days later he lapsed into unconsciousness and never awoke.
The widowed Mary, using the surname "Heckamon," married Joseph Warren Snave, a veteran of Co. E, 76th Pennsylvania Infantry.
