George Rood - The Rejected Child

George Rood was the son of Thomas Rood, the emigrant, by his oldest daughter Sarah. It being the first case of incest proved in New England, by the admission of both Thomas and Sarah. (See his mother Sarah’s Bio)

Thomas was tried and condemned to be hanged in New London, CT and Sarah was to be whipped.

George was born in late 1672 Norwich, Conn, possibly about the time of his father's hanging for incest. In 1673 he was taken by his mother to New London, CT where he grew up and m. July 1702, Hannah Bush d/o Susanna Bush Hall of Norwich, CT.

Although, the "Colonial Records of Connecticut" edited by Trumbull have fairly full accounts of the trial, there is no account of the sad life lived by Sarah in New London, where she lived and reared her child, and where she died in 1714.

That George Rood was rejected by the community is proved by his marriage to Hannah Bush, illegitimate daughter of Susannah Bush by her stepfather, Thomas Hall. Thomas Hall appeared before the court for ravishing his step-daughter (Hannah) shortly before her marriage to George Rood in Jul 1702 in Norwich, New London, CT.

The amazing thing about this case, which is unusual in colonial history (since subsequent incest cases were treated by English common law rather than Mosaic law, heard by a jury of 5 preachers) is the prominence attained by some of the descendants of this couple, both of whom had been rejected by their community.

George Rood was baptized (an adult) 3 June 1709 in the Newent-Lisbon Church. It is presumed that he was a farmer.

George and Hannah lived in Norwich, later removed to Lisbon where they lived and died.

George died 10 Mar 1744 in Norwich, New London, CT. His wife Hannah died 1 Jan 1743-44.
