Lucinda Marie O’dette-Lewis was born in Concordia, Kansas, to Mr. & Mrs. F. J. O’dette (Fred & Josephine) on October 2nd, 1912. Lucinda grew up in Garden City, Kansas. Her religious training in her home and church was according to the teachings of the Catholic Church. She later studied in Kansas City, Missouri, to become a registered nurse. On March 28th, 1937, she married Leland Edward Lewis and they made their home in Garden City. In January 1941, Lucinda became ill and she was taken to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. She was diagnosed as having a blood clot behind her left eye and a slight case of sleeping sickness (African trypanosomiasis). Dr. O. W. Miner and a nurse, Tina Klassen, accompanied her to Kansas City. Lucinda passed away on January 10th, 1941, at the age of 28 years, 3 month, and 8 days. She was survived by her husband, Leland Edward Lewis, and two small children; her daughter, Lucinda Ann Lewis (2.5-years old), and her son, Raymond Lee Lewis (3-weeks old). She was also survived by her mother, Josephine O’dette, and brother, Abner O’dette. The funeral service was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Garden City, Kansas, with interment at the Valley View Cemetery.
