Hazel Marie Thompson Shelton, 98, Belton, Missouri, formerly of Adrian, Missouri, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2015, at her home in Belton. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, Missouri. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00pm Tuesday at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, Missouri. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Crossroads Hospice, Belton, MO, in loving memory of their mother and grandmother, Hazel Marie Shelton. Hazel was born November 18, 1916 in Ballard, Bates County, Missouri, the oldest daughter of Lawrence and Florence (Howe) Thompson. She was united in marriage to Gilbert Leon “Bud” Shelton on September 2, 1934. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Adrian. Hazel and Bud had a long and loving marriage until his death in 1992. They were active in the Baptist Church throughout their lives and worked together in the grocery business, owning and operating the United Supermarket at 89th and Wornall in Kansas City until they retired to Adrian in 1981. During World War II, Bud served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific while Hazel worked at Sears to help support the family. Bud and Hazel were always family-oriented, living in Kansas City but spending most weekends at dinners and events with parents, brothers and sisters in the Adrian area. Hazel’s favorite saying throughout her life was, “I will do anything for my kids,” and she did. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bud, her sister, Ina Christine Dobson, and her brother, Thomas Glenn “Buddy” Thompson. Hazel is survived by her children, Gilbert Lawrence “G. L.” and Judy Shelton (Virginia), Richard Lee Shelton (Missouri), and Virginia Lee and Ronnie Cox (Tennessee); her sister, Bonnie Jean Garrison, Adrian, Missouri; her brother, Lawrence Wesley “Junior” Thompson, Butler, Missouri; grandchildren, Gilbert “Gibb” Shelton (Virginia), William Shelton (Utah), Jeffrey Lynch (Tennessee), Gregory Lynch (Tennessee), Angie Lynch (Tennessee), Heather Marie Shelton (Missouri), and Heidi Kappelman (Texas); 12 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
