Aqui reposan los restos de
SIMON MESA
natural de Guadalajara Mejico
que falleció el dia 3 de
Octubre de 1865
á la edad de 52 años.
dejando in este mundo á
una sufrida esposa que lo
llora sin consuelo.

Onava.
Contempla bien, pasajero,
Este lugar silencioso;
Yace en él un buen esposo,
Buen amigo hombre sincero.
Si estas prendas tu fé abouan,
Alza tu súplica al cielo.
Y pide á Dios dé consuelo
A los deudos que lo lloran.

Translation:
Here lie the remains of SIMON MESA, native of Guadalajara, Mexico, who passed away the 3rd of October 1865 at the age of 52 years, leaving in this world a suffering wife who weeps without comfort.
"Onava." Consider well, passerby, this silent place; here lies a good husband, good friend, sincere man. If these "prendas" [items, garments] "abonan" [cause to grow, pay for, dress] your faith, lift your prayers to the Heavens, and ask God that He may give comfort to the family that weeps for him.

[The title of the poem, "Onava," is not a Spanish word. It could be a misspelling of "Oraba" ("prayed"), or perhaps "Octava" (an 8-line poem). The line "Si estas prendas tu fé abouan" (abonan) has several possible meanings in Spanish. The gist of the poem that if your faith is moved by contemplating this good man in his grave, pray for his grieving family.]
