BUTTE - Jim "Boot" Cooney, 56, of Butte, passed away Aug. 2, 2006.
Jim was born in Butte on Oct. 23, 1949, to Jeanine Leybold Griffith and Joseph Gib Cooney. He graduated from Butte Central in 1967 and continued his education at Eastern Montana College, MSU and the University of Montana in Business Administration.
Jim worked as a casino manager and bartender at various establishments across the state. Most recently, Jim was a maintenance engineer for the UM MT Tech.
During Jim's courageous bout with cancer, he lived with Linda and Bob "Gus" Moodry, his cousins and best friends.
Jim played first base in Open Division Softball for Little Big Man Pizza in Billings and Race Track and Maloney's Bars in Butte. His favorite past times were NASCAR and being a Yankee and Chicago Bears Fan.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanine Griffith and father, Joseph Gib Cooney; grandparents, Corinne and Al Leybold and Gib and Josephine Cooney; also his stepfather, Don Griffith; uncle, Bill Leybold; and cousins, Steve Moodry and Chris Griffiths.
He is survived by half sisters, Terri (Dave) Anderson, Sue Kelly, and half brothers, Mike (Debbie) Griffith and Dan (Carla) Griffith; stepsister, Karen (Charley) Worley, and stepbrother, Don and Diane Griffith; aunts and uncles, Barbara and Bob Moodry, Judy and Lyle Griffiths and Kay Leybold. Also surviving are many caring and thoughtful nieces and nephews, cousins, co-workers and friends.
Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, in St. Ann's Catholic Church. Interment of ashes will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Butte Central Catholic Education or to a charity of donor's choice.
