While serving in the Korean War with the 25th Infantry Division, Captain Zanin was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action as well as the Silver Star for actions of valor near Wonsan, Sobuk-San, Korea. He was also awarded the Purple Heart for serious wounds sustained while adjusting mortar fire upon the enemy.
He eventually rose to the rank of colonel. Colonel Zanin was a member of the Legion of Valor.
Colonel Zanin died on August 22, 2015 in Alexandria, Virginia. His wife Eve preceded him in death in 1985. Their son David died in 1983.
Survivors include his second wife whom he married in 2005, two sons and their wives, three brothers, a sister, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
