JOHN ELBRIDGE UMPHRESS
John Elbridge Umpires was born in Montpelier, Muscatine County, Iowa on April 3, 1870 and departed from this life in Villisca, April 12, 1947, at the age of 77 years.
In 1870, he moved to Montgomery County, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Mary Mattheros on October 21, 1891, and to this union were born two sons and four daughters; Elmer, who died in infancy, Mrs. Zella Zuber, now deceased; Mrs. Mabel Hodge of Creston; Mrs. Beulah Garey, Mrs. Ada Freeman, and Guy of Villisca.
Besides his immediate family, he leaves a sister, Mrs. Mary Yarrington of Villisca, two sisters, Bart of Canada and Frank of Villisca, six grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Mr. Umphress came to Villsica in February 1895 and lived in and around Villisca ever since.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Wolfe Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Tom Tate in charge. The singing was by Mrs. Frances Gray, accompanied by Mrs. Joe Tom Tate, and the pall bearers were Louis Enarson, Dick Freeman, Fred Wisecup, James Alshouse, Don Fidler, and Ray Clark. Burial was in the Villsica Cemetery.
