________________

Billy Maurice Armstrong, 88, of Hickory passed away Thursday, August 27, 2015 at his residence.

He was born July 6, 1927 in Gaston County to the late Reverend W. Earl Armstrong and Jeannette Caston Armstrong. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Nell Rhyne Armstrong; his daughter, Emily Armstrong Long; four brothers; two sisters; and five nephews.

Survivors include his daughter, Linda C. Armstrong of Hickory; three grandchildren, Linda Gail Duckett and her husband, James Duckett of Taylorsville, Shannon M. Fowler and her husband, Dwight Fowler of Hickory, and Bruce E. Faust, Jr. and wife Denise Pope Faust of Newton; two great granddaughters, Tristen Emily Michelle Bailey of Hickory, and Amelia Rose Faust of Newton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In business, Billy began his automotive career at Young Ford in Charlotte, NC and then became Vice President and General Manager of Town and Country Ford in Charlotte. He opened the doors of Armstrong Ford, Inc. in Hickory in 1970 and remained the owner/dealer for 41 years.

Billy was an active member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church for 45 years, a Paul Harris Fellow, and a member of the Hickory Rotary Club. He served in several positions with the NC Automobile Dealer's Association. He was a former member of the Local Board of Directors of Bank of America and an active member of the Catawba Country Club. Billy also served in many capacities of other charitable organizations.

His greatest joy was having his family with him, especially at the Holidays when his extended family gathered together. He was the husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather that everyone wished they had. He made sure his family always felt safe and loved and taught by example the true meaning of faith in God and the peace that comes with that spiritual understanding. Any complaining from anyone was followed by his "count your blessings" speeches. He was also a very loyal and caring friend, and amazingly fair and honest businessman and a very generous and kind gentleman to all.

His hobbies were golf, playing cards with his golf buddies, and flying his airplane. He took great joy in flying Angel Flights for those with urgent medical needs that could not otherwise afford to get to their destinations.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, August 31, 2015 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Andrews and the Rev. Thomas Griffis officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 3:00 PM prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park. Taps will be provided by Hickory American Legion Post #48.

Pallbearers will be past Armstrong Ford Employees.

The family wishes to thank the staff, his special girls and his buddies at Catawba Country Club for making his last years enjoyable. We also sincerely thank the staff and amazing caretakers of Home Instead for their support and excellent and loving care in his final months as well as the wonderful people at Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 52 16th Ave NW, Hickory, NC 28601 or Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd, Newton, NC 28658.
