Jeremiah YORK Sr. is the second born child of the five children born to Joseph C. YORK and his second wife Cynthia Leah BRYSON.

INTRODUCTION:

Although there is no supporting documentation; it is believed Jeremiah YORK Sr., age twenty four, is estimated to have married in 1796 in Wilkes County, North Carolina to Elizabeth "Leah" CLARK, age twenty three. As the families traveled westward their first daughter, Leah York, was born 27 Dec 1801 in Grainger County, Tennessee prior to the families migrating into Kentucky.

JEREMIAH YORK (JOSEPH2, JEREMIAH1) was born 1772 in Randolph County, North Carolina, and died 08 Jun 1843 in Cow Creek, Owsley County, Kentucky.
He married ELIZABETH CLARK before 1799 in North Carolina, daughter of WILLIAM CLARK and LEAH JOHNSON. She was born 07 May 1773 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, and died 07 Dec 1856 in Cow Creek, Owsley County, Kentucky.

Notes for JEREMIAH YORK,
Extracted from: http://bolling5.com/pipermail/bollingresearch_bolling5.com/2014-January/003751.html:

According to an entry in "Wilkes County Pioneers," Joseph York was deeded
244 acres of land on 26 October 1784. The deed was from Peter Greenstreet
and was ordered recorded upon oath of Ambrose Hammon. (Joseph is the father of Jeremiah York, who married William's daughter, Elizabeth Clark.]

Jeremiah is listed on the Wilkes County, North Carolina Tax Roll in Capt.
Nall's District in 1792 with no land.

Notes from James Clark:

It appears William Clark and his sons, Henry and Thomas Clark, and son-in-law, Jeremiah York, who had married William's daughter, Elizabeth, left Wilkes County some time just before 1799 and moved to Grainger County, Tennessee. Henry and Thomas Clark plus brother-in-law Jeremiah York were all listed on the Grainger County tax roll for 1799. Jeremiah paid 1 poll, was listed with no land, horses or any other property and resided within Captain Daniel Taylor's Company.

William Clark is listed for the last time in Wilkes County, North Carolina on a deed in 1800. William Clark and Joseph York then appear in Grainger County, Tennessee when they are included as petitioners to the Tennessee General Assembly on 1 December 1801, disputing the making of three counties instead of two from the area bound between the Cocke County line at the French Broad and Nola Chucky Rivers to the foot of the Cumberland mountains or the Indian boundary. Of those who signed the petition were Henry Clark, Joseph York Jr., Semore York, William York, Joseph York Sr. and William Clark.

On a recommendation that part of Grainger County lying next to Jefferson County, Tennessee as far as the top of Clinch Mountain be made a Superior Court District, some of the signers were William York, Joseph York Jr., Taylor York, Henry Clark and Jerrime (Jeremiah) York.

More Notes for JEREMIAH YORK:

Jeremiah is placed on the Madison County, Kentucky tax roll for the first
time on 11 August 1803. Clay County, Kentucky is formed in 1807 and Jeremiah is included as a resident of Clay County.

In 1809, Jeremiah York purchases 50 acres of land from John White and John Crook of Madison County, Kentucky. By 1823, he had acquired land on Cow Creek in Owsley County, Kentucky.

Jeremiah is the only York listed on the Owsley County, Kentucky tax list until 1825, when Joseph York is listed. In 1830 Uriah York is listed and Joseph now has purchased land on Middle Fork.

Gravesite Details

Perhaps someone will provide a new tombstone to be installed adjacent to the deteriorated tombstones to honor Jeremiah York and his wife Elizabeth Clark.
