Janet was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on September 19th, 1834, the daughter of Edinburgh publisher Thomas (Nielson) and Margaret Sibbald (Black) Nelson.

In June of 1841, Janet was living at home with her parents and five of her six siblings at 398 Castle Hill in Brown's Close in Edinburgh, Scotland; a mere stone's throw from Edinburgh Castle.

On census day in 1851 (March 30th), Janet, her parents, her brother Thomas, and her sister Ann were listed as visitors in the home of her brother John in the Manse of the Free Church of Newport, Forgan Parish, Maryton, Fife where he (John) was a minister.

Janet's father went to be with The Lord in late March of 1861. He was laid to rest in the Grange Cemetery in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Janet's mother went to be with The Lord in mid-December of 1877. She was laid to rest in the Grange Cemetery in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Janet passed into eternity on June 19th, 1924 in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was laid to rest with her family in The Grange Cemetery in Edinburgh, Scotland.
