Nothing is known about Charles Clifford as a civilian. He enlisted, March 24, 1964, in Company D, 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, at 24 years of age for a 3-year term of enlistment. Company D was recruited in Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties but it is unknown where he exactly enlisted.

He was killed in action at Cloyd's Mountain, Pulaski County, Virginia, May 9, 1864, less than two months after he enlisted. Rank: Private. According to the Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers, Vol. 3, pp,. 94, and 715, he was buried at Winchester National Cemetery. The U.S. Government does not have a specific record of his burial pointing to the fact that his grave is unidentified. However, there is a Civil War soldier's headstone which shows only the surname of "Clifford" in Section 75, Grave 3534. This could be the headstone of Charles Clifford or it could not be.
