Billy Mac Hogan (1942 - 2015
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Billy Mac Hogan announces his passing. Bill, 72, died on Saturday, August 15, 2015 in Los Alamos, New Mexico after a short battle with glioblastoma multiforme (brain tumor). Bill was born October 1, 1942 in Montague County, Texas. Because of his father's work, Bill moved to several different towns in Texas as a young boy. In 1950, Bill and his family moved to Lubbock, Texas. He graduated from Monterey High School in 1961 and attended Texas Tech University until 1967 when he was drafted into the U. S. Army. He attended Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, graduating as the distinguished and academic graduate in 1969. Bill served in the Air Defense Artillery branch of the Army, serving in Germany and Vietnam, as well as California and much time at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas. He ultimately attained the rank of Captain.
In 1974, he met 2nd LT Kim E. Barber at Ft. Bliss. They were married in February of 1975. Upon separation from the military in 1975, Bill attended the University of Texas at El Paso, graduating with a B. S. in Metallurgical Engineering in 1978. He worked for Phelps Dodge Refining Corporation at the El Paso Refinery in Texas before moving his family to Freeport, Texas to take a job at the Dow Chemical Company in January of 1980.
In September of 1981, Bill and his family moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico where he began a career at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He worked first as a Metallurgist and Deputy Group Leader in the Materials Science Division before finishing his career as a Project Leader and Deputy Group Leader in Engineering Sciences & Applications. Throughout his career at Los Alamos, Bill most enjoyed recruiting and mentoring early career engineers and watching them grow and succeed. Bill retired from LANL in June of 2005.
Bill leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Kim, his two children, Jeffrey (Megan) of Seattle, WA and Justin of Albuquerque, NM (fiancée, Melissa), his two grandchildren, Madelyn and Jack, whom he adored, his brother Jim (Barbara) and his sister Gayle (Jerry), his in-laws, Harry and Connie Barber, two nieces, six nephews and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Irene Hogan (née Powell).
There will be a private family burial at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
