James was a son of William Arnold and Narcilla Buckingham. His father died a few months before he was born. James married in Guernsey Co. on Feb. 26, 1857 to Miss Matilda Byrd, daughter of George and Olive Byrd. In the 1860 census, his mother, Narcilla, was living with them, as she was in 1870, and listed as 'infirm." He was the father of 10 children including, Tabitha, George, Ellen, Alice, James, Hattie Bell, Charles, Martha, Ida May and Laura. James and his wife died within a year of each other.
