A native Washingtonian, she attended Ursuline Academy in Bethesda, Md. She received her bachelor's degree from the College of New Rochelle and a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Formerly a staff writer for the Toledo Blade and with Newsday on Long Island, in 1968 she joined the news staff of the Washington Star. In 1975 she became manager of the news service at George Washington University, where she remained until 1979 when she joined National Geographic. In 1995 she became editor of the public affairs division.
