WWII Veteran Army Air Corps POW Stalag Luft B24J Ball Turret Gunner from 461st 767 Squadron.

Albert T. Arrotta, died at 91 having retired a GE Draftsman. Born on July 14, 1922, he grew up in Chelsea, the son of Italian immigrants Rosina & Nicola Rosina Arrotta.

Al was a brave flight crew member attached to the 461st Bomber Group stationed in Torretta Italy during WWII. The crew flew a B-24J bomber #77 (the Liberator) on bombing missions targeting German installations. On December 17, 1944 on Mission #151, Al’s plane (and 26 other bombers) were sent to bomb the Odertal Oil Refinery in Germany. Al was one of 9 crews shot down over Germany as they were ambushed by +50 Me-109s and FW-190s. He was one of only 4 who safely escaped and parachuted from the plane. He was eventually captured by the Germans and was transported to Stalag Luft 1 North 2 Barracks 8 (Block 208) located in Barth, Germany during the frigid winter. He suffered from abuse and starvation as a POW until the camp was liberated by the advancing Russian Army in early May of 1945.

Al entered the GE drafting apprenticeship program at the Lynn, Massachusetts aviation center shortly after returning home from the war. He subsequently made major contributions and became a well-respected member of the project drafting team until his retirement.

Al was a great sportsman enjoying Racquetball, Ballroom Dancing, & Tennis. He spent many glorious nights at The Wonderland Ballroom in Revere dancing. He had many younger friends who were not aware of his death.

Al was buried with his sister Olga McGarraugh who died in 1974. He had no wife or children and his grave sadly remains in a state of neglect with no service marker or date of death.
