Son of Lewis Norton Amsberry and Jane Ann Coffman of West Virginia.

Husband of Emma A. Armstrong of Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa; married on 22 September 1886.

One of the first schools to be established in Custer County, Nebraska was in the sod homestead of James Green Amsberry.

"Tuesday evening at 6 o'clock, after a lingering illness of several months, Greene Amsberry passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. Henry Zimmerman. Deceased was born in Marion County, Iowa, August 7, 1858. He was a resident of Custer County 26 years. He leaves a wife, mother, four brothers and two sisters to mourn his death.
Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Barrett conducting the services. The remains were buried in the Ansley Cemetery."
