Major League Baseball Player, Manager. He was a catcher for twenty seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox and St.Louis Browns. He was named to the American League All Star Team in 1937. After retiring as a player, Sewell managed the St.Louis Browns from 1941 to 1946 and the Cincinnati Reds from 1949 to 1952. In 1944 he guided the Browns to the American League Pennant, however they lost in the World Series to their hometown National League rivals the Cardinals. Sewell was the younger brother of Hall of Fame shortstop Joe Sewell with whom he was a teammate of in Cleveland from 1921 to 1930. In 1630 games during his playing career, Sewell had 1393 hits with a .259 lifetime batting average. As manager he won 606 and lost 644.
