Died
At his home one and a half miles south of Lovett, Ira Long, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. McClellan. He was born at Poplar Corner, Jennings County , March 10, 1882, and departed this life June 10, 1904, at the age of 22 years and three months. At the age of six years his father died, leaving his mother and him to mourn a husband’s and father’s love and care. He united with the Commiskey Baptist church Nov. 17, 1901, and was ever a constant and faithful member until death. He believed in the up-holding of the faith, and was ever ready to help a fallen brother. In 1890 his mother married R. J. McClellan, who was ever a kind and loving father to him, granting his every wish. Some two years ago he was stricken with lung trouble from which he never recovered. But through all his suffering he never murmured, saying that he was prepared and willing to go. His only regret was in leaving his sorrowing relatives and friends who mourn their loss.

Commiskey Column

Elmer Wilkerson and family, of Scott county, came up last Sunday to attend the funeral of Ira Long.
Nearly every one from this vicinity attended the funeral of Ira Long at Hopewell last Sunday afternoon. He has many friends here who regret their loss very deeply. He died at his home 2 miles north of here, on Friday afternoon at 3:10 o’clock of consumption from which he had suffered two years. He was 22 years, 3 months old, and had been a member of the Baptist church here for about three years. His last words were that he was ready to go. Though it is sorrowful to see one so young, promising and well liked as Ira leave us, yet we can have the hope of meeting him again. Rev. Owens, of Madison, preached the funeral discourse.

Gravesite Details

Because of the difference between the death date on the stone and the date of this obit I checked with the Jennings County Health Department, and his death record shows the 1904 date to be correct.
