According to my ggg-grandfather's diary that he kept, there were days they got no rations. Sunday, September 18, 1864 - "Today is wet and renders our encamp miserable. We did not get our rations late today and then for want of us we had to go to bed hungry." Other days it was "1 half pt Beans 2 spoonfull of meat" The very next day they got nothing but "1 half pint of flour" That was Oct 6 and 7, 1864.
His early notes after being taken prisoner mentioned several times that the "Confederacy was hard up"
On May 9, 1864 which was soon after his arrival he wrote that he "wouldn't feed any dog on such grub as we get".
