Headstone says: In Memory of William Neil who died Sept 5th 1813, Aged 77 years
William married Mary Catherine Reynolds, the daughter of John Reynolds. She is buried next to him in Bethel Cemetery. He was born in Ulster Ireland.

William's parents were John Neal and Margaret of Paxtang Township Dauphin County PA. John Neal died Oct 17th 1791 and his will lists his sons William, John, Robert, James, and daughters Margaret, Jean, Agnes and Eleanor. John Neal came to the USA and purchased 200 acres in what is now Dauphin county - Paxtang townhip in 1738. William and his Brother John first purchased and lived on land in Conecocheague Valley, Antrim Twp, Franklin County prior to the Rev war. Then after the war they came to Indiana/Westmoreland County PA. On March 13, 1799, William Neal of Westmoreland Co., Penna., sold to George Clarke of Franklin County, two tracts of land in Antrim Twp., "laid out" to James Scott by 2 warrants in 1762-1763.

"[William Neal] was from the north of Ireland. His wife was Mary [Catherine] Reynolds. They first located at [Lancaster County} (now Dauphin County) later in Franklin County. and eventually came to Indiana County. In the 1700's where he obtained nearly 3000 acres of land west of Indiana near Jacksonville. He was a surveyor and became very well known. His death occurred in 1813 when he was 77 years old. And he was buried at the cometary at Bethel Church in this county. We have the following Record of his children, Thomas....who first married Margaret Creviston, second marriage to Catherine Barnhart; John who married Lydia Kelly who had first married Samuel Lewis; Mary died unmarried; Rosanna died unmarried, and William who first married Mary Cunningham and then married Susan Neff. "

"...William and Mary Catherine Neal, were of Scotch-Irish origin. They emigrated from the north of Ireland to [Conococheague Valley, Antrim Twp, Franklin PA , which is slightly north of] Hagerstown Maryland, about 1760 and at the close of the Revolutionary war removed to what is now Young township, where William Neal died in 1813, aged 77 years, and where his widow passed away shortly afterwards, having reached her four-score years. They had five sons: John, Thomas, Samuel, James and William. "

"The founder of the the Neal family in this section was William Neil, an emigrant from Ireland who had migrated to the vicinity of Conecocheague Valley, Antrim Twp, Cumberland PA., and about the close of the Revolutionary war had removed to what is now the John Neil homestead, Young township. His death occurred in 1813, at the age of 77; his wife, Catharine, died subsequently at the age of eighty. Their children were Mary, John, m. to Mrs. Lydia Lewis, nee Kelly, Thomas, m. to Margaret Crevison; Samuel, James; Rosanna, and William, m. to Mary Cunningham."
