The 'Water Poet'. Taylor was a Thames boatman, carrying passengers across the river in the days when only one bridge spanned its width. He rose to be a prominent member of the Boatmen's Guild, and wrote tracts such as 'John Taylors Manifestation', 'To the Right Honorable Assembly', and 'John Taylors Last Voyage and Adventure of 1641', and 'The True Cause of the Watermen's Suit Concerning Players', the latter of which concerned an argument between the boatmen and actors. He also wrote of coachmen in his tracts 'An Errant Thief' and 'The World Runnes on Wheeles'. He completed over one hundred and fifty publications in his lifetime, many of which were gathered together in the collection 'All the Workes of John Taylor the Water Poet' in 1630. Such was his observation of the social climate, he is read more by historians than poets. He is also credited as one of the earliest writers of palindromes.
