Edith Frances Shurtlieff Jelinek passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2001, at the Pierce Manor Nursing Home in Pierce, Nebraska, where she had been a resident since April. She was 98.
Edith was born on August 6, 1903, in Tabor, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Francis and Adda Young Shurtlieff. She married Roy ("Hap") Jelinek in June of 1931 at Valentine, Nebraska. They had no children.
A longtime resident of Springview, Edith attended Nebraska State Teachers Colleges in Wayne and Chadron, Nebraska, and received her bachelor's degree in elementary education. She was an elementary school teacher and principal in Springview, and also taught for several years in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers Robert Cyrenus Shurtlieff and Walter Wayne Shurtlieff; sisters Dorothy Ann, Eva Lena Jansen, Myrtle Letitia Manzer, and Mabel Mildred Schultz. Edith is survived by her sister Bessie Alice Shurtlieff Gaskill of Great Falls, Montana; nephew Theodore Manzer of Atkinson, Nebraska; niece Bonnie Gaskill Martz of San Rafael, California; as well as other nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
As a teacher, Edith touched the lives of many children and their parents in Springview. She will be missed by family and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 17, 2001 at Hoch Funeral Home in Ainsworth, with Rev. Galen Wray officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Springview. Hoch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
