Robert C. (Bob) Shurtlieff, 65, a well known Bonners Ferry resident passed away at Community hospital Friday morning September 28. He had been in failing health for the past several months.
He was born August 28, 1907, at Tabor, Iowa, the son of Charles and Adda Young Shurtlieff. He received his elementary education at Tabor and later moved with his parents to Colome, South Dakota, where he graduated from high school.
Following high school he joined with the family in operating a farm until 1927 when the family moved to Springview, Nebr., where the farming operation continued. On October 15, 1927 he married Naomi R. Patterson at Lake Andes, South Dakota.
Following his marriage he made his home at Springview, Nebr., where he engaged in farming, construction work and was employed for several years as a heavy equipment operator.
In 1945 he moved his family to Bonners Ferry and has been associated with Boundary County, City of Bonners Ferry, Moyie Lumber Company, now Louisiana-Pacific, and Marion Davidson as a heavy equipment operator.
In 1970 he retired from active work and has since made his home on the Northside.
A quiet, unassuming man, he devoted himself to his family and to Bonners Ferry Lodge No.43, AF&AM and played the lead role in developing a highly-skilled and efficient graveside ritual team for the lodge.
Besides being a member of the Bonners Ferry Lodge No.43, AF&AM he was an active member of the Moyie Shrine Club and Calam Temple at Lewiston, Idaho.
Possessing a deep faith he attended the Bonners Ferry First Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife Naomi at the home; a son, Robert Roy Shurtlieff in Spokane; three daughters, Mrs. Emery (Ruth) Mohn, Mrs. Ernest (Janet) Dickson, and Mrs. Delmar (Dorothy) Unruh, all of Bonners Ferry.
A brother, Walter W. Shurtlieff, Springview, Nebr., also survives along with five sisters: Mrs. Eva Jansen, Mrs. Mabel Schulz and Mrs. Edith Jelinek of Springview, Mrs. Myrtle Manzer of North Platte, Nebr., and Mrs. Bess Gaskill of Great Falls, Mont.
He also has eleven living grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Ann Shurtlieff in 1916.
Funeral services began at 2:00 p.m. today at Malone Funeral Home with Rev. Kelvin Groseclose officiating. Interment was to follow in Grandview Cemetery with Masonic graveside honors by Bonners Ferry Lodge No.43, AF&AM.
