Services held for Elsie J. Miller

Funeral services for Elsie J. Miller were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 15, 2001, at the Siloam Lutheran Church in Paullina, Iowa, with Rev. Gary Bode Officiating. "I Know My Redeemer Lives" and "Heaven is My Home" were sung by Brenda Crabtree. "Be Still My Soul" was sung by the congrega­tion. The organist was Kelly Hahn. The casket bearers were David Hohbach, Paul Cates, Sandra Steinberg, Bruce Hohbach, Jason Miller, and Joyce Gross. Interment was at Prairie View Cemetery at Paullina, Iowa, under the direction of the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home.

OBITUARY

Elsie Johanna Miller, the daughter of George and Emma Beermann Puhrmann, was born January 5, 1905, in Union Township, O'Brien County, Iowa. She received her education in country school and later at Zion Lutheran School in Paullina.

On March 28, 1928, she was united in marriage to William Miller by the Rev. John Hartmiester in Paullina. After their marriage the couple farmed most of their married life in Cherokee County, Iowa. After 35 years of farming they retired and moved into Paullina in 1963.

Her husband preceded her in death on August 26, 1974, in Primghar. She had been a resident of the Paullina Care Center since January of 1997. She passed away at the care center on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, reaching the age of 96 years, 8 months and 6 days.

She was baptized on January 15, 1905, by Rev. Oscar Horn at St. John's Lutheran Church in Germantown and later confirmed on May 30, 1920, by Rev. A.H. Seemann at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. She was a former member of Zion Lu­theran Church in Paullina and a for­mer member of the Dorcas Society and the Ladies Aid of the church. She had held offices as president and secretary for a number of years. She was currently a member of the Grace Lutheran Church Wisconsin Synod of Sioux City.

Elsie leaves to cherish her memory five children: Donald and his wife, Elizabeth Miller of Paullina, Elaine and her husband, Loyce Cates of Cherokee, Ruth Hohbach of Marcus, Charlotte and her husband, Gene Grefe of Tempe, AZ, and Orlyn and his wife, Sharon Miller of Minneapolis, MN; also 12 grandchildren; two step-granddaughters; 24 great­grandchildren; three step-great­grandchildren; and two great-great­grandchildren; also three brothers: Ray and his wife, Alma Puhrmann, Martin and his wife, Teddie Puhrmann and Ralph and his wife, Neoma Puhrmann, all of Paullina; three sisters: Mrs. Emily Meyer and June and her husband, Clifford Miller of Paullina and Ruth and her husband, Emmet Berhow of Leroy, MN; also two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ruby Puhrmann and Mrs. Audrey Puhrmann of Paullina; also a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Arlene; daughter-in-law, Maurene Miller; son-in-law, Wilmer Hohbach; granddaughter, Marilyn Miller; grandson, Doug Hohbach; great-granddaughter, Debra Hohbach; two great-grandsons: Tyler and Trevor Nelson; parents; two brothers in infancy; three brothers: George Jr., Lee and Bently and a sister, Gladys.
