Sara Graybill Houser of West Chester

Sara Graybill Houser, 84, passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Sara was the beloved wife of the late James Howell Houser.

She was the mother of three children and is survived by her son James Howell Houser, Jr. and his wife Paige Mahaney, her daughter Patricia Houser Mahaffey, and her son David Bruce Houser and his wife Kandy Knisel Houser. She is also survived by eight loving grandchildren - Bob, Kelsey, William, Elizabeth, Gretchen, Lucas, Tori, and Tara.

Sara was born in Middleburg, Pennsylvania on February 20, 1931, the third and youngest child of the late Irvin Graybill and Sara (Cromleigh) Graybill. She was raised in Middleburg and graduated from Middleburg High School in 1949 and Bucknell University in 1953.

Her ancestors lived for generations in Snyder County (PA) and they instilled Sara with a love and devotion for family - qualities that would remain with Sara throughout her 54 year marriage to her husband and as a mother to their three children.

Sara and James were grade school classmates in Middleburg until his family moved after sixth grade. They did not communicate again until after college graduation when James had a dream about Sara and wrote her a letter from Naval Officer Training School in Rhode Island. They dated several times, became engaged, and two years later she flew to Honolulu where they were married at the U.S. Naval Base where he was deployed during the Korean War. Sara lived for almost 50 years in West Chester.

In addition to being a devoted housewife and loving mother, Sara taught piano lessons, volunteered and worked at the church. She and her husband were longtime friends with their neighbors in Green Hill Terrace in West Goshen. They were members of First Presbyterian Church and Whitford Country Club.

Sara was preceded in death by her older brother, Irvin Graybill, Jr., and her older sister, Phoebe (Graybill) Maneval.

A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, August 21, at First Presbyterian Church, 130 W. Miner St., West Chester, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m.

Interment will be on Saturday, August 22 in Paxtonville Cemetery, Paxtonville, Pa.
