SSGT Harry D. Rants

335th Bomb Squadron

95th Bomb Group (H)

8th United States Air Force

World War II

Sgt Rants evaded capture after the crew of the B17 he was waist gunner on all ejected. A wing was torn, an engine was out, and at 20,000 feet the B17 shook violently. They ejected between Rennes and St. Malo France 29 May, 1943. Spent many days and nights filled with paranoia laying in wait evading German forces. Eventually he would make it to Paris only to bail out of the train he was on in fear on being brought forth to German forces by civilian passengers. He eventually made it to Le Locale France where they finally were able to sleep. Sgt. Rants and the two crew members he were with were jailed 7 June 1944 in Laupen where they stayed for two days until they were moved to Berne. After intense interrogation by French lawman they were released into quarantine camps for evading forces. The rest of the harrowing experience is in photo form on this very page.
