Architect and Surveyor. Sir George Gilbert Scott, RA was born in Gawcott near Buckingham where his father was rector. In 1827 Scott was apprenticed for four years to an architect in London named Edmeston. After being appointed architect and surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey 1849 to 1879, he restored the Chapter House in Westminster Abbey and drew up designs for the restoration of the north front. He studied the Fabric of the Abbey deeply and thoroughly and wrote his valuable book "Gleanings from Westminster Abbey". Being the foremost of the Gothic Revivalists, he worked on 29 cathedrals, British or colonial, 10 minsters, 476 churches, 25 schools, 23 parsonages, 58 monumental works, 25 colleges or college chapels, 26 public buildings, 43 mansions, and various small ecclesiastical accessories.
