Mr. Gilbert retired from Washingt on & Lee University in 1988.
He was preceded in death by a son, Claude E. Gilbert, four brothers, one sister, one grandson and a great-grandson.
He is survived by his wife, Etta Coffey Gilbert; three daughters, Frances Lee Gilbert of Buena Vista, Patricia L. Wampler of Natural Bridge and Betty J. Kelly of California; three sisters, Blanche Parker and Effie Henson, both of Buena Vista, and Verna Hall of Chester County; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; many stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Service.
