Son of Asa Bert Cross and Ruby Leah Birdsall

Arthur Bert Cross, age 87 of Conway, died September 8, 2013 at the Hiland Cottage of Hospice of Little Traverse Bay in Petoskey.


Arthur was born on April 10, 1926 in Alanson, MI, the son of Asa Bert and Ruby Leah (Birdsall) Cross and was raised in Alanson. In July of 1944, Arthur was inducted in the US Navy and proudly served his county as a Radioman Third Class for 2 years during WWII in the Pacific Theatre, where he received a Bronze Battle Star for his service in the Okinawa Campaign. Arthur received his honorable discharge in June of 1946 and returned home, going to work at Parker Motor Freight at the Petoskey Terminal, retiring in 1986 after 40 years of service.

On October 27, 1950, he married Dorothy Jean Phillips in Harbor Springs. In 1960, Arthur and Dorothy made their home in Conway and he has resided there since. Dorothy preceded Arthur in death on May 13, 2001.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and travel. He was a member of the Harbor Springs United Methodist Church, Past Master and Life Member of the Pellston Masonic Lodge #440 Free and Accepted Masons, past President and Life Member of Petoskey Outboard Club, past officer of the Conway Community Club, past Secretary of the Conway School Board, and a past member of the Kiwanis Club.

Arthur is survived by 2 sons, Fred (Nancy) Cross of Riverview, and Gerald (Belinda) Cross of Bridgeport; 2 grandchildren, Jerry Cross of Riverview, Jill (Roger) Kehn of Romulus; great grandson, Brendan Johnson, of Oklahoma; sister, Arlene Hoy of Indian River; and by several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey, on Friday, September 13th from 3-7pm and on Saturday September 14th beginning at10:00am. A service celebrating Arthurs life will be held on Saturday, September 14th at the funeral home, beginning with Masonic Honors at 11:00am followed by a memorial service officiated by Pastor Mary Sweet. He will be interred next to his wife Dorothy at the Little Traverse Township Cemetery in Conway. The family requests that donations in Arthur's memory be directed to Harbor Springs United Methodist Church or Hospice of Little Traverse Bay.
