She was born April 18, 1930 in Norfolk, VA and was the daughter of Alfred A. and Juanita D. Anderson.
She was predeceased in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Lawrence H. Edwards, and her parents.
She is survived by her 5 loving children, Deborah E. Eure (Wayne), Rebecca E. Mahoney, Lawrence H. Edwards, Jr. (Denise), Phyllis L. Edwards, and Thomas W. Edwards (Cristina); 7 grandchildren Christopher, Meredith, Jennifer (Terry), Patrick (Melissa), Kevin, William and Amber and 4 great-grandchildren Adam, Olivia, Matthew and Paisley. She is also survived by her brother, Alfred A. Anderson, Jr. and sister, Evelyn A. Ball.
Shirley retired from the Portsmouth Public School System in 2007 after 38 years of service as a school crossing guard or as she jokingly told people “standing on the corner”. She loved assisting the little ones across the street and over the years saw many of “her kids” grown and with children of their own.
She was an active member of Glebe Episcopal Church in Suffolk and served as Altar Guild chair for 20+ years; a job she dearly loved and was very meticulous about.
She had many talents and was very accomplished with any type of handwork including knitting, crocheting, smocking, quilting and sewing. She especially enjoyed making things for her family or for various charitable organizations.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 in Glebe Episcopal Church, 4400 Nansemond Parkway, Suffolk by the Rev. Ross F. Keener, Jr.
