Paul Robert Coffman, son of Paul Edwin Coffman and Emeline Maud Kriner Coffman, was born June 12, 1926 in Tunnelton, Loyalhanna Township, Westmoreland County, PA. He passed away Nov. 25, 2003, in Springfield, MO, aged 77 years.
Upon graduating from McArthur High School, McArthur, OH, he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Before and after his army duty, he was employed by the National Gypsum Company in Detroit and Louisville.
He graduated from Ohio University at Athens where he was a member of Scabbard and Blade National Military Honorary Fraternity, Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity and Theta Chi social fraternity.
He sang in and toured with the University's Mixed Chorus and Men's Glee Club.
He married Lorita "Rita" Mae Werts Aug. 19, 1956. To this marriage, three daughters were born.
In September of 1954, he entered the College of Law at the University of Cincinnati, and later transferred to the College of Law at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and graduated in June 1957.
He was admitted to the Missouri Bar Association and started practicing law in Jasper County, MO in 1958.
The family moved to Greene County, MO in 1960, and resided there for over 39 years.
In August of 1973, he was appointed as Judge, Municipal Division, 31st Judicial Circuit, Springfield, MO. In this capacity, he was a member of the American Judicature Association and the Association of Magistrate and Municipal Judges as well as the Springfield Metropolitan and Missouri Bar Association. He was Judge 16 years and retired May of 1989.
He was a member of United Lodge #5, A.F. and A.M. (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons) and all bodies of York Rite Masonry, Springfield, MO. He was a former member of the Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Temple in Springfield and sang in the Shrine Chanters for many years. He was past commander (1969) of Goad-Ballinger Post #69, American Legion, Springfield, MO; past president, Sunshine Kiwanis Club; and past president, High Noon, Masonic Men's Club.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church where he served as an adult Sunday School teacher and a member of the church choir for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Lorita "Rita" Mae; daughter, Colette Lorita Coffman of New York City, NY; daughter Catherine Grace Coffman of St. Louis, MO; daughter Carolyn Marie Coffman Fox, her husband, David Louis Fox, and their three children, all of Chesterfield, MO; sister Florence Margaret Coffman of Baltimore, OH; sister Rose Mary Coffman Chatfield, her husband Jimmy Chatfield of Lancaster, OH; and sister-in-law, Mrs. Luther "Marie" Coffman of Wellston, OH.
Preceding Paul in death were his father and mother of McArthur, OH; brother Luther Harland Coffman of Wellston, OH; brother Edwin Arthur Coffman of McArthur, OH; brother Ralph Leonard Coffman of Caro, MI; and sister Catherine Grace Coffman Letzler of Cincinnati, OH.
A military service for the family was held Nov. 26, at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery. Memorial services will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church in Springfield Nov. 29. Conducting the service will be Rev. William W. Moore. Arrangements are under the direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home South.
