Permelia Hatfield was born August 7, 1837 in Dunlap, Sequatchie, Tennessee. She was the daughter of John Summerfield & Eleanor (Duvall) Hatfield. About 1855, she married Joseph T.M. Patterson. The young couple farmed in Upper Cove, Walker County, Georgia. Three children were born to the, Viola L. in 1855, John Francis in 1856 and Florence L. in 1860. With the event of the Civil War, Joseph enlisted March 4, 1862, and became a private in the 12th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. He was captured at Wilderness May 6, 1864 and was placed in the Point Lookout Prison in Point Lookout, Maryland. Sadly, he died June 2, 1864 in prison from intestinal problems.

At the age of 27, Permelia married Isaac Killingsworth on August 3, 1865 in Hamilton County, Tennessee. The 1870 census shows them farming in Subdivision 128, Fricks Gap, Walker, Georgia. Four children were born to them; William Lewis born 1868, Sarah Allie born 1872, Lassapine born 1873, and Jane born 1877. Permelia died about 1876 (possibly related to the birth of her last child, Jane). She may be buried in an unmarked grave in "Old Lookout Cemetery." Isaac Killingsworth remarried and had five more children.
