HARMONY - Clayton S. Lombard, 89, of Harmony, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, in Skowhegan, surrounded by his family. He was born on Dec. 26, 1925, in Harmony, the son of Ivan E. Lombard and Helen (Donahue) Lombard.

He graduated from Harmony High School in the class of 1943, and married Helen Wentworth soon after. They had five children.

Clayton was hard worker and in early life he often held more than one job – working on farms and/or with road crew in summers; cutting and hauling lumber in autumn; plowing snow in winter; and tapping trees and making maple syrup in spring. His main occupation was maintaining the State roads in Somerset County and keeping them safe for travel. He retired in 1986 after 37 years of service with the State of Maine Dept. of Transportation.

After retiring, he and his wife Dorothy (Herrick) travelled across country by car – all four routes, and travelled many times to Las Vegas, Nev., and Biloxi, Miss.

Clayton was a member of the Odd Fellows and Patriarch Club in Harmony. An athlete in his younger days, he became an avid award-winning shuffleboard player in Florida where he spent winters for 15 years. He watched almost all the Red Sox and Patriots ballgames. He liked playing poker, cribbage, and 63, as well as hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. A great storyteller, he could entertain family members for hours with his stories and jokes.

Besides his wife Dorothy Lombard, formerly Dorothy Herrick, of 36 years of Harmony; he is survived by his five children, Judith Lombard of Alexandria, Va., Bruce Lombard of Harmony, Darrell Lombard and his wife Rachel of Windsor, Craig Lombard and his wife Deborah of Grinnell, Iowa, Anneliese Lombard of Hancock; his eight grandchildren, Christopher, Leslie, Rachel, Jodi, Shawn, John, Kayla, Brendon; two step-grandchildren, Regan and Ryan; 11 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; several nieces; a "brother" Hubby Herrick and his wife Linda of Harmony, and a "special sister" Ellen Dore of Harmony. He also leaves five stepchildren, Sheilah Conceison and her husband James of Easton, Mass., Lynda Rowell of Cambridge, Pamala Spence of Taunton, Mass., David Wilbur and his wife Shelly of Verona Island, Laurie Stewart of York; 10 step-grandchildren, Frankie, Heidi, Michelle, Eric, Hunter, Jordan, Dakota, India, Montana, Chyna; and 8 step-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his father and mother; one sister, Chloe Cote and two brothers, Wayne Lombard and Gordon Lombard; his former wife Helen; and one daughter, Wendy Corson.

Burial will be at the Sugar Hill Cemetery in Harmony.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Woodlawn Nursing Home and their exceptional staff.

Donations may be made in Clayton's memory to the Aliza Jean Family Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 124, Harmony, Maine 04942or at the website www.alizajeanjustone.org/donate/ (Central Maine Newspapers 8/8/2015 and Smart & Edwards Funeral Home)
