John Johnson was killed in the explosion and fire of Winter Quarters #4, a coal mine. This was May 1st, 1900. The town of Scofield, Utah was preparing for a festive party and dance that evening to celebrate a new coal contract and continued work and prosperity. At 10:28 AM a low series of growls was felt and heard all over town. The mine exploded. Instead of a celebration all manner of horror and grief descended on the towns. 200 good men died. 114 are buried here in the Scofield cemetery.
