By 1828, Humphrey left the family home to go west to Huron County, Ohio. There he married on 4m 12 1829, Jane C. Jenney, the daughter of John Jenney and Catharine Davis of Greenwich Township.
Humphrey and Jane settled on 100 acres in Section Two, Lot Two of Greenwich Township. Other Gifford family members soon settled in Huron County -- brothers Joseph, Abraham, Edward, Micajah; sisters Deborah Gifford Hustin and Sarah Gifford Barney; and cousin Lydia Gifford, her husband John Lippitt Eddy, and her parents Rufus and Ruth Sherman Gifford. Brother Giles remained at Collins, and John Sherman Gifford moved to Michigan.
Jane and Humphrey were active and respected elders in the Society of Friends at Greenwich. Together they raised seven children -- Mary J., Abram D., Sarah W., Catherine C., William Henry, Humphrey J. and Elida Jane. Of these, only Sarah and Humphrey J. remained in Greenwich, while the others left Ohio to seek their own property and livelihoods.
In failing health for several years, Humphrey Gifford died at his home in Greenwich on 14 August 1882.
