A founding member of the Greenwich Society of Friends Women's Meeting, Jane C. Jenney was born near New Bedford, Mass. There Jane spent her early youth, one of 10 children of John Jenney, a ship's carpenter, and Catharine Davis. When Jane was eight years old, the entire family relocated to Scipio, Cayuga County, NY.

By 1820, three of Jane's siblings -- Obadiah, Beersheba, and Mordecai, had left Scipio and relocated to Huron County, Ohio in pursuit of less expensive land and economic opportunity. All but Sarah and Silvia of the remaining family followed them to Greenwich by 1824.

On 4m 12 1829 in Huron County, Ohio, Jane Jenney married Humphrey Gifford, the son of Abraham Gifford and Lucy Sherman. The next year, the newlyweds bought the first of their properties, eventually settling on 100 acres in Section Two, Lot 2 of Greenwich Twp. There, Humphrey and Jane raised their seven children: Mary J., Abram D., Sarah W., Catherine C., William Henry, Humphrey J. and Elida Jane.

Of her passing on 26 September 1890, the Norwalk Chronicle observed, "She was truly one of the pioneers of the county, and an estimable woman."
