Florian Francis Kummer was born July 31, 1932, to Anthony and Elizabeth (Jungworth) Kummer on the family farm near Parkston. He grew up on the farm and attended Sacred Heart Parochial School in Parkston. He entered the United States Army and served during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he moved back to Parkston.
He was united in marriage to Lorraine Montefering Aug. 21, 1956. He was a lifelong farmer until poor health forced his retirement in 2014. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and VFW.
He died on Wednesday, July 29, at Avera St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston at the age of 82 years.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, Parkston; six children, Jean (Roger) Susie, Kingsley, Iowa, Paul Kummer, Parkston, Tom (Viann) Kummer, Parkston, Jan (Tom) Weber, Alexandria, Kevin (Mary) Kummer, Parkston, and Julie (Derrick) Matheny, Colorado Springs, Colo.; eight siblings, Anthony (Kaye) Kummer, Mitchell, Lewis Kummer, Omaha, Neb., Duane (Dianna) Kummer, Mitchell, Theresa Bigge, Sioux Falls, Joanne (Dennis) Hegg, Mitchell, Marlene Olson, North Carolina, Carol (Oren) Long, Omaha, and Dorothy (Bill) Osak, Visalia, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Elizabeth Degen; two brothers, Danny in infancy and Norman; sisters-in-law, Shirley Kummer and Joyce Kummer; and three brothers-in-law, Norbert Degen, Bernard Bigge and Merlin Olson; and a son-in-law, Kerry Juhnke.
