Letter from a fellow Americal Division soldier

Dear Bob,

I don't know if you remember me or not. I do recall you. When I joined HQ BTRY, 221 FA BN on the banks of the Quange River in New Caledonia, you were the NonCom in charge of the antitank platoon. Man was I green when I was put in your charge.

I joined the survey team along with Ed McFarland and Sgt. Jimmy Walker. In Fiji I joined the radio Section and on Bougainville the FDC until the 221st Bn sent me home from Yokuska, Japan.

In Bougainville, you and I with the others took a test supervised by Major Spooner who asked what a "gung meter" was and it turned out to be the old aiming circle which was a French invention for Napoleon's artillery.

I hope that these old memories of mine coincide with any that you might have to recall the old comradeship of the 221st FA BN and the Americal experience.

During the Korean Conflict I helped train 8 in the S P howitzer crews. I ran into Col. Hill and he complimented me by saying that "The battery will be well trained" when he saw I was wearing my Americal patch.

Sincere wishes and hope you are in the best of health,

HARRY
