ADOLOS ALLEN,
Son of Henry and Elizabeth Ann (Richardson) Allen, was born December 12, 1855, in Iowa City, Iowa. He made a public confession of his faith in the United Presbyterian church of Hoboken, N.J., at the age of fifteen. His preparatory studies were pursued in the Hasbrouck Institute of Jersey City, N.J., and he graduated from Williams College in 1878. Entering the Seminary at Princeton in the fall of the same year, he took the full three years’ course there and graduated in 1881. He was licensed by the Presbytery of Jersey City in 1880, and ordained by the same presbytery June 23, 1881, being at the same time installed pastored of the Claremont Church of Jersey City Heights, N.J. He was released from this charge April 15, 1884. He was pastor of the Third Church of Williamsport, Pa., from February 12, 1885, to April 14, 1894, to February, 1896; pastor of the church of Reading, Pa., from May 5, 1897, to October 23, 1900, and pastor of the Second Church of Cranbury, N.J., from November 23, 1900 to June 23, 1914. From 1914 to 1916 he was chaplain of the Sailors’ Home and Institution of New York City. During the later years of his life, he was engaged as temporary supply for various churches in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He died January 25, 1927, in the hospital of Scranton, Pa., after an operation for appendicitis in the 72nd year of his age. He was buried in Williamsport, Pa. He was a commissioner to the General Assembly of 1883 and 1891. He was moderator of the Presbytery of Washington City in 1885. He received the degree of M.A. from Williams College in 1887. He was married October 19, 1882, in Jersey City, N.J., to Eloise Hadden, who died January 21, 1903.
